Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Lieutenant, in the 2nd US Artillery. With the 2nd US Artillery, he distinguished himself in actions at the Battles of Gettysburg, Trevillian Station and Winchester. For gallant and meritorious services in actions destroying Confederate railroad tracks at Trevillian Station, Virginia, June 12, 1864, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in April 1892. After the war, he remained in the Regular as a Major in the 3rd US Artillery. He served in the Spanish American War and retired from the Army a Brigadier General in 1900.
