Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 124th New York Volunteer Infantry "The Orange Blossoms". At the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, l863, he was killed, shot through the head, while leading his regiment over Devil's Den Ridge. The regimental monument there marks the spot. The statue at the top of the monument is that of Ellis.
