John, who resided at 306 West-Thirtysixth Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Captain on the M.S. Sunoco, Merchant Marines, during World War II.

John was "Lost At Sea", along with 9 other Merchant Marines, when the M.S. Sunoco suffered an internal explosion of the east coast during the war. The ship was later salvaged.

He was awarded the Mariner's Medal.
