Deaf Mute Murdered In France
A 24-year-old deaf mute's vacation trip to France ended tragically Saturday when his body was found in a ditch in a Paris suburb. He had been strangled, slashed and hit on the head, and most of his money was gone.
He was Alton H. Goad Jr., Wyncliffe Ave., Clifton Heights. He had been totally deaf since birth and used sign language to communicate.
His parents got the news of their son's murder when a newspaper reporter telephoned them Saturday for details.
A passing truck driver found Goad's body about 7 a.m. in a ditch in the Paris suburb of Tremblay-les-Gonesses.
The truck driver told police he passed the body about 5 a.m., and on his way back at 7 a.m. he had stopped to investigate.
Police said Goad's face was slashed with either a knife or razor and he appeared to have been hit on the head with a blunt object.
His wallet was missing and the pockets of his clothing had been inside out, according to police. Only 90 cents in change and a silver dollar were found on the body.
Goad's belt, apparently used to strangle him, was found near the body, police said.
Police found only a hotel receipt made out to Goad, but no other identification.
The victim's body lay near an abandoned, bloodstained car, which police traced to Hertz rental agency at Paris's Orly Airport. The rental forms showed Goad carried an American passport and a Pennsylvania driver's license.
Goad's passport was found in his baggage at the Hotel Racine in Paris's Left Bank section.
