Name variations: Erick, Erik, Eric. Records from Sweden show his name as "Erik Joseph". Sometime before 1908 he switched his first names from Erik Joseph to Joseph Eric.

Joseph Eric Erickson immigrated to Utah during 1897-98. He found employment at the numerous smelters around Salt Lake Valley. During 1900 his sister, Anna, immigrated to Utah and his parents arrived in Utah a year or so later (1901-02).

MISSION
During 1908 Joseph received a mission call to Sweden. While serving in Sweden he meets Gerda Brita Elisabet Victorson. A relationship developed and marriage was proposed. At completion of his mission, 1910, Joseph and Gerda traveled to Utah, aboard Steamship Laurentic but separate voyages (Joseph during August 1910 & Gerta during October 1910). They were married 2 November 1910 at Salt Lake City, Utah.

The exact history as to why Joseph & Gerda traveled on separate voyages is not known. However it may have something to do with Joseph being presumed by Swedish authorities as being required to serve a tour of duty with the Swedish Army. Apparently this issue was resolved with help from the U.S. State Department.
