BENJAMIN ABBEY, son of Elizur and Betsey (Gildersleeve) Abbey, born September 27, 1809, at Chatham, Conn.; died there April 11, 1865.

He was by trade a ship-carpenter and, in association with his father, built ships at the yard near Siam Dock at Chatham, in Middle Haddam, Conn., and in Georgia for a few years. In 1860 he was recorded by the Census at Portland as a farmer, his mother living with him and his two sons, Elizur and Charles,
at home.

Married in Portland, December 26, 1833, VIENNA MATILDA PELTON, born February (or May) 13, 1863, in Chatham, daughter of Abner, jr., and Esther (Hamlin) Pelton, and a descendant of the Honorable Giles Hamlin, first mayor of Middletown. She died in Portland, August 23, 1900. She was a member
of the Congregational Church.

Elizur (1) Abbey, b. Oct., 1834; d. May 3, 1838.

Esther Hamlin Abbey, b. Sept. 5, 1837 ; m. James Roland Howell.

Elizur (2) Abbey, b. May 11, 1839; d. at the State Hospital in Middletown, Jan., 1892, buried in Portland. Not married.

Charles Pelton Abbey, b. Dec. 11, 1845 ; m. Anna E. Day.
