Private, Students' Army Training Corps, WWI
In the spring of 1918 - at the height of U.S. involvement in World War I - the U.S. War Department established the National Army Training Detachments program. By that fall, over 500 institutions joined the effort, including the State University of Iowa, whose unit consisted of over 1,700 enlistees in October 1918. The NATD's student training program became known as the Students' Army Training Corps.

Dr. Belding was born June 11, 1896, to Herbert H. and Effie (Rockwood) Belding in Waucoma, Iowa. He received his DDS degree at the University of Iowa at Iowa City in 1919 (where he also was a pitcher for the Iowa Baseball team), and also received an honorary BS degree from Upper Iowa University in 1943.
Paul "Bert" Belding was a lifelong resident of Waucoma. Dr. Belding was the editor of "Dental Items of Interest" from 1937 until his death in 1953. He was a member of the American Dental Association for the Advancement of Science, a Mason, I-Club, International Association of Dental Research, Friends of the Land, author of many articles in newspapers and scientific publications, Standard Lodge No. 351 A.F. and of the Belding-Fox_Slagle American Legion post, former Director of Research at Upper Iowa University, and was Waucoma and Eden township committeeman of the Republican party. He had practiced dentistry in Waucoma for 34 years (since 1919) and was the only dentist the community had.
He and his brother Dr. Leland Belding did research on dental caries and their work was mentioned in Time Magazine in the October 31, 1938 edition.
He and Miss Leta Rawson were married Nov. 8, 1919. They had four children: Dora Lee, LeVerne, Catherine and James.

WAUCOMA (Special) - Dr. Paul H. Belding,of Waucoma, a nationally known personality in the dental field, died at a New Hampton hospital at 12:20 yesterday. He had suffered a heart attack Wednesday morning.
Dr. Belding was editor of the Dental Items of Interest from 1937 until his death. The magazine is published in New York for the dental profession.
He was recognized as an authority in his field and was in constant demand for articles and talks. He had practiced dentistry in Waucoma since 1919. He also maintained an interest in Republican politics and was an enthusiastic civil worker.
