Based strictly on "oral recitation", "oral tradition"...or "what everyone has always been told" the following would be considered "true and accurate":

After the untimely death (at age 22) of his first wife, Leta Violet Hamm Hayes' brother, Guy Arthur Hamm moved himself and his two now motherless children back to Illinois "so his sister, Leta Violet Hamm Hayes (a.k.a. Mrs. Charles W. Hayes), and mother, (Mrs. William Sylvester) Mary Jane Eckard Hamm, could help [him] raise the kids." As fate would have it he met--and, later, married--Mary Grace Crist, instead.

Leta Hayes' sister-in-law, M. Grace Crist Hamm gave each of her own six children "flower names". This author has come to call this "Grace Hamm's 'Kindergarten' " because:
1. The word "kindergarten", in German (Grace's heritage is German), means "garden of children",
2(a) Grace Hamm had been a school-teacher herself (before becoming a stepmother and then a birth mother) and
2(b) "Kindergarten" is also the name commonly given to the first formal schooling a child receives in America.

Leta Hayes' niece, Leta Elvira's, flower name was "Violet" for Leta Hayes' middle name.

"The Dress"
Leta Hayes was very handy with a needle and crocheted things as diverse as doilies and little girls' dresses. One dress pattern was created multiple times and passed down from generation to generation for the female children. In honor of Leta Hayes' loving handiwork many of the recipients wore the same dress pattern in formal portraits. This author (not knowing there were more than one of them created) came to call the pattern "The Dress" because each formal portrait was of the little girl alone even when the child had female siblings. It has become something of an extended-family tradition.
