Morgan started out his career in teaching, working his way to administrative responsibilities in only a few years. He then entered into a series of appointments and elective offices: justice of the peace, assessor, school trustee, commissioner of highways, assemblyman in the legislature, chairman of the committee on agriculture,... He was a charter member of the Pawling Savings Bank, and he helped organize the Putnam County Savings Bank and became its president. In addition, in the early 1850s, he entered into the dairy farming business, and he was known for his extensive fruit orchards. He had a very eclectic and extensive career.
