THIS IS WHAT BRANDI SAID AT THE SERVICE.
Not too long ago I stood at this same podium for my PawPaw's funeral. I read my Mom's eulogy she had written about him. Just as I was getting started someones cell phone rang. Guess who's it was? So I said Ronnie Wooten, and he just looked at me and smiled.
Ronnie is my big brother.
From as early as I can remember my brother tormented me. I'm talking he gave new meaning to the word "Pester". This service isn't long enough for me to tell you all the times he pulled one over on me. Now keep in mind I am 7 years younger than he is, so it probably wasn't that hard. I'll start with the famous scratch n sniff. Some of you know this story. Ronnie was about 13 years old when he got a piece of paper and drew a circle on it and in the center of the circle he wrote the words scratch n sniff. He knew I loved scratch n sniffs. So I scratch and then I sniffed. I'm not even gonna say what he had done to that little circle, but it did not smell good. I screamed and cried and of course he laughed. After I was grown he would sometimes call me on the phone and tell me he got me some more of those scratch n sniffs. He was always doing things like that.
When I was little I loved my brother so much, I was always trying to kiss him. He would never, ever let me. I don't remember one time that he let me kiss him unless Mom made him. One day he told me he was finally going to let me plant one on him. He told me to close my eyes and pucker my lips. So I did and when I opened my eyes I realized I had been kissing the face of a boy from our old neighborhood named Lumpy. Ronnie thought that was so funny, he teased me for years about that. About 10 years ago he left me a voicemail and said hey this is Lumpy, remember me?
Ronnie was always picken at me. He would come in my room and beat up my stuffed animals, lock me in the closet and tell me the ice cream man was coming, and for a while he even made me believe we had Pirates living behind our house.
It took me a long time to realize my brother really did love me. After I became an adult he would tell me he loved me from time to time and he would occasionally let me kiss him.
Since the accident I have had a hard time understanding how this could happen. Some say God has a reason for everything. I'm usually the kind of person that doesn't buy that. But I've been doing a lot of thinking . What if God really did have a reason, what if it was a really good reason. Some of you know Ronnie has been struggling with some serious health issues. He has Diabetes and high blood pressure and his weight was starting to affect his quality of life. We all knew if something didn't change he was in serious trouble. So what if God knew something that we didn't? It gives me just a little bit of comfort believing that what if instead of God taking him, he was saving him.
Instead of writing a traditional closing, I've decided I'm going to write down every story I remember and every story I hear about my brother. I'm going to pass this on to Tori and then to her children and then their children. That way my brother will be remembered as the most pestering, teasing, picking and loving Bubba that ever lived.
