Brothers George & Joshua Mott (aged 6 & 2) were living with their father Henry Mott and 5 older siblings in Novesta Twp, Michigan in the 1880 US Federal Census. The Mott family were neighbours with Robert & Lucy Curtis (and the family of Lucy's brother William Cooper). The boys' mother Henrietta had died just 6 months prior. At that time, a widowed man with small children usually gave them to his family or others, being unable to raise them himself. So, Henry gave George & Joshua to Robert & Lucy Curtis, who were recently married at the time but would never have children of their own. Both boys took the Curtis surname.
