Born to poor sharecroppers, Jewel spent most of his childhood moving from farm to farm, much to his displeasure. As a young adult, Jewel became a logger until he saved enough money to purchase land in the Double Springs community of Oktibbeha County. He'd live there for the rest of his life. The road to his home would eventually bare his name, Allen Road. There he managed his farm and raised a family with his wife Velma.
