Civil War Union Brigadier General. West Point Class of 1834. Most notable for his service at Gettysburg on July 1, l863. Commanding a brigade of Robinson's Division of the I Corps as a Brigadier General, he warded off the Confederate attacks of A.P. Hill. During the action a bullet passed through his right temple and out his left eye, permanently blinding him. His senses of smell and hearing were also greatly impaired. He never fully recovered and was discharged from the service as a Brigadier General in the Regular Army.
