Civil War Union Brigadier General, Connecticut Governor, US Congressman, US Senator. He admitted to the Connecticut State Bar in 1850 and commenced law practice in Hartford, Connecticut. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 1st Connecticut Volunteer Infantry and was commissioned Captain. He served with distinction throughout the war, rose to the rank of Brigadier General and was brevetted Major General, US Volunteers in September 1865. After the war, he was elected Governor of Connecticut, serving 1866 to 1867. In 1872, he was elected as a Republican to represent Connecticut's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, filing the vacancy caused by the death of Congressman Julius L. Strong. He served until 1875, and was then re-elected to the office in 1878, serving this time to 1881. That year he ran for and was elected as a Republican Senator to the United States Senate, where he served until 1905. He died in Washington, DC fourteen days after leaving his Senate seat.
