Enlisted, October 8, 1898 (founding year), in Troop A Cavalry, NYNG, NYC. He saw field service with Squadron A (Troop A) during the Buffalo Switchmen's Strike (1892), Brooklyn Motormen's Strike (1895) and the Croton Dam Strike (1900) (Squadron A).

He served in the ranks and promoted to First Sergeant, Troop 3, Squadron A, April 28, 1898.

Spanish American War, he was selected to be a member of Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry and mustered in, as a Sergeant , May 2, 1898, at Camp Black, Hempstead, NY.

The NY Squadron (Troops A & C) were assigned to Camp Alger, VA, for training. On July 4, 1898, at Camp Alger, he was appointed 1st Lieutenant, Infantry, an assigned to the 201st NYV Infantry. He was assigned to the Staff of Major General Guy D. Henry
