Son of John Sevier Branson (a 49er) and Martha Jane Ousley. Husband of Ellen Margaret "Ella" Geary. Came to California as a young boy. Settled with family in Mariposa County in mid-1850s. From end of 1870s onward owned, with Ella, a 1300-acre cattle ranch and gold mine property near Quartzburg, about two miles north of Hornitos.

Buried in the non-Catholic portion of the cemetery, i.e. the Hornitos "city" cemetery.
