Rose raised his young son who adored her. She died when Gilbert was eight. Augustus then married Anna Martin Deems of St. Louis. She died of pneumonia and he married Leila Wendell. As soon as Gilbert Endicott Ross (b. 1888) was of legal age, he changed his name to Herbert Oesterle Ross.
Augustus was traveling alone, by car, when he had a heart attack and died. He is linked to three children. He also had Arthur Augustus Ross, born 27 June 1887 in Philadelphia, PA. The death certificate was signed by Mrs. Edith Pannett, R.F.D. Winchester, PA.
