Jim was the son of Garnett Robert "Grant" Gilley and Julia Ann Stisher. Jim was one of eleven children born to Grant and Julia.

Jim Gilley Dead

Jim Gilley, one of the three men who engaged in the terrible fight at Holly Pond, Sunday, the 15th of June, died at his home near Holly Pond, Sunday. Mr. Gilley was shot through the abdomen and it was at first through he would die immediately but the surgeons found that while the bullets passed through the abdomen no intestines were perforated and that Gilley had a chance to live. The immediate cause of death was dues to peritonitis.

The body was buried at Holly Pond Monday afternoon.
There was a report in town Tuesday that Grant Gilley was dead but that was not true, and it is not believed that his wounds will prove fatal.
