US Congressman from Virgina. Admitted to the bar in his native Brunswick County, he took an early interest in politics and was a member of the State House of Delegates from 1806 to 1809. In 1808 he won a special election to the US House of Representatives to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Clairborne; he was subsequently elected to the Eleventh and three succeeding Congresses, representing Virginia's 17th District until his death in office. During the War of 1812 Gholson was a volunteer aide on the staff of General Peter Buell Porter and was wounded in the defense of Washington DC in 1814; he died from the long-term effects of his injuries. His nephew, James Herbert Gholson, was also a US Congressman.
