Juan De Dios Benavidez, 83, a resident of Las Vegas, passed away at his home on Sunday evening surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tomas and Rosa Santillanes Benavidez; brothers: Ricardo, Manuel, Cruz, and Federico Benavidez; sisters Ramona Ortega and Rita Martinez; children: Mary Tommy Turner, Lawrence Martinez, Rosemary Benavidez, and Johnny Martinez; grandchildren, Randal and Gregory; and a great-grandson, Luciano.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Isabel M. Benavidez of the family home; five daughters: Connie Martinez-Coca and husband Johnny of Laramie, Wyo., Anna Mae Gonzales and husband David of Albuquerque, N.M., Irene Graston and husband Paul, Denise Benavidez and companion Angelo Herrera, and Vynessa Turner and companion Bernardo Martinez all of Las Vegas; four sons, Macario Martinez and wife Georgia of Laramie, Wyo., Rafael Martinez of Las Vegas, Robert Benavidez and companion Roxanne Nolan of Prague, Okla., and Paul Benavidez and companion Janice Trujillo of Las Vegas; a close friend, Alex Ulibarri of Las Vegas; two sisters, Petra Sena and husband Cecilio and Elvira Benavidez all of Albuquerque, N.M.; 23 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and a numerous other relatives and friends.

He was born in Mineral Hill, N.M. on Nov. 8, 1926, and received his early education in the Mineral Hill and San Geronimo area. He worked for the C & H Sugar Refinery in California and was a pipe fitter for the Kaiser Company in Richmond, Calif. He worked as a rancher and truck driver for the "Flying B" Dairy Farm and did government surveying for the Land Grant. He also worked at Roggow's Music Store and was a caretaker for the Herman Ilfeld Ranch, K. Barnett & Sons, and the Bonita Ranch. He was a county supervisor for county roads and bridges and was also a ranch caretaker in Trout Springs and Tres Lagunas in Oklahoma. He was a deputy in the San Miguel County Sheriff's Posse and enjoyed riding the Fourth of July Parades here in Las Vegas and was a mayordomo in the San Geronimo Church. He was a pentitente and belonged to the Nuestro Padre Jesus and La Morada de San Geronimo. He was also a member of the Upper Gallinas Acequia Association.

A visitation will be held from St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals and Cremations on Thursday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Services will be held from Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning at 9 a.m. by Father C. John Brasher. The interment will follow in the San Geronimo Cemetery with the following serving as casket bearers: John Herrera, Arvin Martinez, Michael Martinez, Shane Graston, Tomas Chavez and Kenneth Gonzales. Honorary bearers will be the rest of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
