Jan Kluzak was born on December 16, 1851 in Svinkach, Bohemia (of the Austrian Empire), the son of Matyas and Anna Kluzak. His mother died in Bohemia. In 1854, his father married Katherina Svec and they had 5 sons. In 1870, the parents and the 6 boys left Bohemia for the United States. The family departed from the Port of Bremen, Germany on the ship named "Main". The ship was built by Caird & Co., of Greenock, Scotland, tonnage: 2,893, Dimmensions: 365' x 40', Single-screw, 14 knots, inverted engines, twin masts and one funnel. Their destination per the ship's records: United States of America. The family arrived in the Port of New York, New York on November 17, 1870.

Jan found employment in Cleveland, Ohio and remained there while the parents and brothers went to southern Minnesota.

Jan worked for John D. Rockefeller Company as a barrel maker. It was in Cleveland that he met his future bride, also an immigrant from Bohemia. Jan and Mary Pekarek were united in marriage on July 13, 1874 in Cleveland, Ohio. Jan and Mary had three children, Anna, Jan and Ottokar (Arthur) born in Cleveland. Jan had obtained his U.S. citizenship there and also started using the name John. In early 1883, John went to the Tabor, Polk County, Minnesota area, found employment and established a home there and then sent for his family. Mary and the children came from Cleveland by train to Euclid, Minnesota.
John worked for Keystone Farm for a time and then established and operated a blacksmith shop in Tabor.

The family suffered the loss of son, Jan on March 20, 1895 at the age of 17 years, 10 months and one day.

Six more children were born in Tabor - Rose, Joseph, William, James, Edward and Charles.

Jan Kluzak, husband, father, grandfather, step-son, half-brother and uncle, passed away on Monday, November 11, 1903.

John is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Anna and her husband, Joe Machal, and Rose Kluzak; six sons: Arthur, Joseph, William, James, Edward and Charles Kluzak; two granddaughters; three grandsons; his step-mother, Katherina Kluzak; five half-brothers, Vaclav "James"; Antonin "George", Frantisek "Frank". Josef "Joseph", and Matyas "Michael"; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his son: Jan "John" Jr., his parents, Matyas and Anna; one grandson in infancy; two granddaughters in infancy; a half-sister, Mary in infancy.
