Mrs. Kate Baker, widow of Reuben Baker, slept peacefully away at her home at the old Baker homestead, three miles north of McClure, Friday midnight, December 20, 1929, aged 83 years, 3 months and 9 days.

Her last sickness covered a period of five or six weeks. The infirmities incident to extreme old age caused her last illness and her death which she met without much apparent suffering. Her mind remained clear and strong until the end came. She recognized everybody that visited her sick room even to the last. A short time before she passed away she recalled and related with a remarkable degree of accuracy and with almost perfect powers of memory the earliest events of her long life. About a month before she died she suffered a slight stroke of paralysis.

Her maiden name was Miss. Kate Kahley, a daughter of George and Lydia (Wagner) Kahley, deceased, former residents of McClure. On January 5, 1871, she was married to Reuben Baker, who preceded her in death, 25 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Baker became the parents of nine children, seven sons and two daughters. Two sons are dead. The five living sons and two surviving daughters are: Frank M., Lyman M., Mrs. Charles (Ada A.) Ewing; Mrs. James H. (Sallie L.) Weader, McClure, RFD, Cluney A., McClure, David F., Baltimore and Jacob A., McClure, R.D. Mrs. Weader resided on the homestead with whom the mother made her home for the past number of years. Mrs. Anna Freed, of Lewistown, is a step-daughter, the only surviving of the step-children, of whom there were ten.

Twenty-seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren of Mrs. Baker are also surviving.

In her infancy, Mrs. Baker received the Christian rite of baptism by Rev. Mr. Rishel and in her early life she was converted in the Baker Evangelical Church, three miles north of McClure. At the time of her death she was one of the oldest members of this church, and the oldest lady in West Beaver Township. She was widely known and much respected and esteemed by her numerous neighbors and friends with whom she labored and associated throughout her long and useful life.

Brief funeral services were conducted at her late residence, the old Baker homestead, 3 miles north of McClure, Tuesday, forenoon, December 24, at 10 o'clock, followed by the principal services in the Baker Evangelical Church, where she worshiped many years, at 10:30 a.m. Her pastor, Rev. M. W. Dayton officiated and burial was made in the cemetery adjacent to the church.
