Head-on crash kills two teens, injures four

PIASA---Two teenagers were killed and four people seriously injured in a head-on
collision Monday afternoon on U.S. 67, about two miles south of Southwestern High
School in Piasa.

Officials from the Macoupin County Coroner's Office pronounced Fayette resident
Travis Cunningham, 16, dead at the scene shortly after 3 p.m. Coroner Charles
Landers said Cunningham died of massive internal injuries.

Robert Vandygriff, 22, was driving south on Highway 67, trying to pass, when his car collided with another one traveling north about 2:40 p.m., according to State Police
District 18, based in Litchfield. (Chasity Vandygriff, Paula Tucker, Sara Pollard, Steven Vandygriff, Paul Ebbeler were also in the Vandygriff vehicle.)

The other car was driven by John Norris, 19, of Rockbridge. His lone passenger was Cunningham. Norris suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Alton Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday.

The accident is being investigated by a State Police accident re-constructionist. Landers said autopsy information will take several weeks and coroner's inquests will be held.
