Tall tombstone written in Hungarian:
Theresa (maiden name Nogradi) Biggs
married
Miklos Nagy
NAGY spelling changed at Ellis Island 1905:
to;
Nichlos Biggs
Nagy meant "Big," in Hungarian so name was
changed to Biggs.
**********************************************
Theresa's husband
Nick (Miklos) was born in Magyar Hungary.
That was where they lived before coming
to U.S.
HUNGARIAN SPELLING OF NICK BIGGS:
was:
MIKLOS NAGY
((On manifest it is spelled))
MIKLOSONE NAGY
Nick had spelling of his name changed when
he & 1st wife Theresa (Nogradi) Biggs and
children came to U.S. in 1906.
Name was NAGY which meant Big in Hungarian
so they changed it to Biggs, at
Ellis Island New York.
*************************************
Nick & bro/in/law Ben Nogradi first
came to
U.S.on Ship Armenia 4 Apr 1906.
Nicholas then went back to Hungary to
get his Wife:
Theresa and two Dau's
1.Terezia 2yr.
2.Baby Julianna (Julia) 2 months old
also bringing his sister
Suzanna (Nagy/Biggs) Nogradi.
she was wife of Ben Nogradi who
was brother to Theresa.
Suzanna (Nagy) Nogradi came on
Ship Ultonia arriving 14 Nov. 1906.
It took them over 1 month on ship to get
to New York. At arrival Terezia age 2 got
very sick. They were quaranteened at
Ellis Island for sometime. Theresa died
shortly thereafter.
NOTE:
Can't imagine the hardship being
on a ship for 1 month with a 2yr old &
a 2 month old baby.
WHAT COURAGE IT TOOK.
**************************************
Nick & Theresa had 4 children:
1.Theresa Jr.
2.Julianna Theresa (Julie)
3.Helen
4.Nick Jr.
5.Louis
Also 1 miscarriage.
NOTE:
Theressa had a miscarage with #6 child.
She died of complications.
Julia was only 9 yrs old at the time.
She told of " having to stand on a box
to cook," as she couldn't reach the
stove. She had to care for her sibblings,
cook, clean, and go to school too.
Her Dad remarried but the stepmom was
very mean to children, especially Julia.
