Law Enforcement Figure. He was a Los Angele Police Department homicide detective who carried badge #1 and served for 51 years, beginning as a rookie officer in 1942. Renowned for his investigations of many of Los Angeles's highest-profile murder cases, he served 43 years as a homicide detective beginning in 1949. One of his first assignments was the notorious Black Dahlia murder, a case he worked on-and-off until his retirement in 1993. His nickname, "Jigsaw John", caught on because of his ability to piece clues together in difficult cases. In 1982 he received the department's Distinguished Service Medal for 8 years of investigation and the conviction of William Bonin, "The Freeway Killer." The 1976 television series "Jigsaw John", starring Jack Warden, was inspired by the detective and the cases he worked. After retirement, he was a technical advisor for the film industry until his death.
