He was serving with the Brigade Reconnaissance Force deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
LCpl Joe Pool was killed in a rocket-propelled grenade explosion while on operations in northern Nad-e Ali district, Helmand province.
Aged 26, originally from Dumfries, he lived in Greenock, Inverclyde. He enlisted in August 2003, completed infantry training in Catterick and served tours of Northern Ireland and Iraq before deploying to Afghanistan. Fit and tough, he recently qualified as a battalion physical training instructor and anti-tank detachment commander. A senior officer described him as "the ultimate Scotsman, exceptionally proud of his heritage, tough, stoical, and incredibly loyal." He had an irrepressible sense of adventure, boxed for the battalion and was a die-hard Celtic FC fan. A kindhearted man, he recently rescued an abandoned puppy that was being used as a football by local Afghan children and was raising funds to bring Hera home with him.
LCpl Pool leaves behind his fiancée Lynsey Houston and sons Lee and Jamie, his parents Stella and Roderick, brother Ryan, other relatives and many friends. His family said, "Joseph was a loving son, brother, father, and devoted partner. Joseph lived life to the full and was proud of everything he achieved in the Army, always putting others first and doing the best he could at all he did."
Funeral Mass at St Andrew's RC Church, Greenock and burial with full military honours on September 24, 2010.
