He served with the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles Battle Group deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Capt Andy Griffiths died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham of wounds sustained on August 24 in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. While leading his platoon in a security operation to clear a compound, he was caught in an explosion. He was given first aid at the scene and then evacuated for further treatment.
Aged 25, from Richmond. He was brought up in a military family (his father is Brigadier Mike Griffiths) and studied European and International Studies at Loughborough University before starting the Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in September 2007. Capt Griffiths only ever considered joining The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, the "Lions of England", as it was his father's regiment. He previously served in Cyprus and Afghanistan before deploying in July as commander of a fire support group. Known as "Griff" he was described as an inspirational leader and a rising star. A fine rugby player, he had an infectious energy and lived life to the maximum.
Capt Griffiths leaves behind his parents Sue and Mike, sisters Laura and Abigail, brother David, girlfriend Nic Hammond, other relatives and many friends. His family said, "Andrew was a beloved son, brother and boyfriend who will be hugely missed for the joy he brought into our lives. We are immensely proud of him and all that he has achieved in his all too short a life. He died doing a job he loved and excelled at."
Funeral with full military honours was held on September 16, 2010 at St Michael's Garrison Church in Tidworth.
