James was a Brandywine Hundred farmer who along with his cousin Amor Grubb was one of the five charter trustees of the local school board. He was also appointed a county magistrate in 1808. On September 24, 1787 at Old Swedes, he married his first cousin, Sarah Ford, daughter of John Ford and Prudence Clayton. They had nine children. James was a long time vestryman at St. Martins.
