Jonas was born in Dunbarton, Hillsborough Co., NH (now known as Merrimack Co.). He first married Hannah Perkins on July 30, 1820, daughter of Samuel and Mrs. Thankful (Caldwell) Perkins, nee Burnham. She was born March 26, 1802 in Dunbarton, NH. They resided in Dunbarton, NH, where Mrs. Hannah Jameson died July 7, 1842. To this union were born five children: Frederich, Hugh Thomas, Samuel Francis, Daniel and Jonas Hugh.
In 1846, he married Caroline Dodge Merrill, daughter of Richard and Fanny (Whipple) Merrill. To this union were born six children: Alonzo, Eugene Dinsmore, Daniel Dinsmoor, Harriet Alexandra, Charles Fremont and John A.
Jonas was reared in the family of his uncle, Jonas Hastings, for whom he was named. He was a man of great physical strength, commanding stature and fine personal presence. Mr. Jameson suffered from paralysis and served out the remaining years of his life in the Merrimack County Alms House in Boscawen, Merrimack Co., NH.
