Jacob Morris Ruddick was the first of 15 children born to Solomon and Mary Morris Ruddick. Jacob was named after his mother's father, Jacob Morris. Jacob's brothers and sisters are (in the order of their birth) Jacob Morris, Rachel, twins - Elizabeth A and Mary Ellen, twins - Amy Melinda and Jane Mecinda, Nancy Matilda, Anna, Catherina Jerusha, John, twins - Elwood and Esther, Lindley Lincoln, Solomon Trueblood and Mariam Matilda.

Jacob married Leurenah Lucinda Brown on 8 Dec 1850 in Warren, Indiana. Six children were born to this union: Thomas Solomon Brown Ruddick, William Riley Ruddick, Isaac Marshall Ruddick, Mary Martha Ruddick, Jacob Lincoln Ruddick and Leurenah Minerva Ruddick. Rena died on 26 Aug 1873. Jacob remarried on 15 Apr 1875 to Malinda Sweany in Jackson County, Indiana. They were married only 1 year and 7 months; Malinda died on 7 Nov 1876. No children were born to their marriage. Jacob then remarried Barbara Ann Carr on 3 Mar 1878 in Jackson County, Indiana. Jacob and Barbara had two children: George Carr Ruddick and Cora R. Ruddick.
