Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served during the Civil War first as Colonel of the 1st Michigan Volunteer Light Artillery, then as Chief of Artillery on the staff of Maj. General Lovell H. Rousseau. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on June 20, 1865 for "meritorious services".
