Millie was the 4th of 5 children born to John O. & Ruth Lakey Lacy. She grew up in a happy family who attended church faithfully, the local Church of Christ. Although the church did not use musical instruments in their regular services, Millie grew up enjoying the fiddle playing of her father and she herself played the mandoline. Those were the days of neighborly gatherings at folks homes in rural Texas communities.
Millie also became well acquainted with field work when her older brother, Edward died at the young age of 17 of apendicitis, the days before penecillin. So Millie accompanied her father in the fields to help fill in from the great loss of an only son. He dearly loved all of his 4 daughters, but it nearly broke him to lose his son.
Millie was 22 when she married Jesse B Barnett, a chef for UPRR. They married on Valentine's Day, Feb 14, 1939 in Tejuana, MX.
They began a home in downtown Los Angeles where their son Michael Leslie was born in 1941. Millie had learned to be resourceful during those war years as Jesse was feeding troups being moved on the train to various locations, so was gone from home quite often.
Mike always felt his mother's assurance and protection as they had to use public transportation because she didn't have a driver's license.
In 1951 the family moved to a new home in La Habra, CA and another son, Thomas Raymond, was born that Fall. Their family enjoyed the neighbors who would come and go thru the 37 years at that residence & kept many of those early formed friendships.
After Jesse's passing in 1983 Millie remained at the family home until 1988 when health concerns prompted her to move to be near her son's family in Oregon.
She enjoyed a newly built home in Canby, until more severe health issues led her to move into a nearby assisted living residence in 2000, where she lived until her death.
Millie never 'lost' her native Texan drawl, as she would relate jovial stories of her early life, esp remembering fondly her Mom & Pop Lacy, the deep love & respect were apparent in the telling.
