Joseph was the owner of the historic "Spite House" at 82nd Street and Lexington Ave in NYC, which was built on a 5 foot wide strip of land. He built the house, in which he would later live, to "spite" the developer of an neighboring apartment house who refused to purchase the property for $5,000. The building code at the time allowed bay windows to extend over the sidewalks and this enabled parts of the building to be 7'3" wide. Unfortunately this unique historic treasure was demolished in 1915.
