DeWitt Talmadge “D. T.” Beard, Jr., born January 24, 1923, died June 8, 2016.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2016, at First Baptist Church of Laurel with services following at 12 noon at the church. Interment will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery. Dr. Randy Turner will officiate.


Mr. Beard was preceded in death by his father, D. T. Beard, Sr.; mother, Vera Wynne Beard; brother, Marvin “Buddy” Beard; and his beloved wife, Margaret Hassell Beard.

Survivors include his son, John M. Beard (Sherry) of Laurel; daughter, Betty Ann Beard of Jackson, Alabama; sister, Joy Roberts, brother-in-law, John D. Hassell (Ellen), and one grandson, Adam Beard all of Laurel; and one niece and three nephews.

During World War II he served with the 13th Fighters Command in the Pacific as a radio operator. He was the longest-serving member of First Baptist Church of Laurel, a member of the American Legion and Dixie Golf, and he was on the Board of Directors for the Bank of Laurel. Mr. Beard was in the farm supply business for 50 years and was the owner of Beard’s Feed Store. His hobbies included golfing and fishing.

Pallbearers will be David Hassell, Mickey Holloway, Hayden Lambert, Zane Lambert, Russell Roberts, and Barry Taylor.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request donations to First Baptist Church of Laurel or the Jones County Junior College Foundation.
