Deceased Name: Daniel Bacon
Commander, Submarine Officer, Sonalysts Executive Dan Bacon, 67, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on Tuesday, May 30, 2006. He was born in San Diego on January 7, 1939 to Barton and Ruth Bacon.
After graduating from Stanford in 1960 with a BS degree in math and physics, he entered the U.S. Navy submarine nuclear power program. He served for 20 years in the submarine force on USS Gudgeon (SS567), USS Jack (SSN605), USS Daniel Boone (SSBN629) as Engineer Officer in Submarine Squadrons 3 and 5, as Executive Officer USS Guitarro (SSN665), and as Commanding Officer, USS Haddock (SSN621). Under his command, USS Haddock (SSN621) was awarded the Battle Efficiency "E" for excellence signifying the number one submarine in the squadron.
While in the Navy, Dan earned a Master of Science degree in Operations Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. CDR Bacon's honors include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and Navy Commendation Medal.
He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1980 after a brilliant career during the pioneering days of submarines in the Cold War. After retiring from the Navy he settled in San Diego with his beloved wife Sharron and his two sons, Dan Jr. and Keith.
Dan founded the west coast office of Sonalysts, Inc. in San Diego, a firm initially specializing in support of a variety of U.S. Navy sonar, communications, weapons and training programs. Under Dan's leadership for 25 years until his retirement in March 2006, the company served a diverse set of customers in the military, business, government, education and entertainment markets.
Although Dan received many tributes and awards during his life, to be thought of as a true friend was his most important accomplishment. In his own words: "To have friends and family to share the joys of success, to help overcome the adversity that comes our way, and to enjoy the beauty and adventure of life. And when you get right down to it, isn't that what it is all about?"
He is predeceased by the love of his life, Sharron Marie Bacon of Bellingham, WA, who died in September 2005. He is survived by his sons, CDR Daniel K. Bacon, Jr., USN, and Keith A. Bacon of Seattle, his daughter-in-law, Beth Bacon and his dear grandsons, Arthur and Henry.
The family requests that any memorials be directed to the US Submarine Force Dolphin Scholarship Foundation. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, June 9, 2006 at 11am at Bayview Cemetery in Bellingham, WA. Arrangements under the care of Jerns Funeral Chapel and On-Site Crematorium.
