World War I Figure. She moved with her husband to East Java where she became educated on the Hindu and Oriental culture. She returned to Europe and divorced her abusive husband. She moved to Paris and began a career of an exotic dancer, claiming to be of oriental background and changing her name to Mata Hari. She met many rich and influential men including high-ranking military figures. When WWI broke out, she had ties in both Germany and France as well as other countries. Mata was apparently asked to be a spy by both sides, but controversy surrounds as to if she really provided any valuable information. She was arrested as a spy, tried in court, and convicted. Mata Hari was executed by firing squad. Since no one claimed her body afterwards, her body was then donated to science.
