Flight Sergeant 439556 Atkinson, RAAF, was the son of Alfred and Louisa Atkinson; husband of Thelma Atkinson, of Hurstville, New South Wales, Australia.

He died on 17th January 1945, on board Wellington Bomber NC 706 from 29 Op Training. The aircraft took off from RAF Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire on a night cross country exercise. The starboard engine failed and the aircraft crashed near Bruntingthorpe. He was 24.
