Herbert married Adelaide B. Jackson in 1877

The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Saturday, June 30, 1928

The funeral services for Herbert L. Allen, the pioneer and the son of pioneer parents who died at his home in Ronald township Wednesday afternoon, where he was born and where he lived for 72 years.

These were in charge of Rev. Holcomb, a former Palo minister. The home from which a large circle of friends radiated, was filled with those from this group, and this assemblage of persons and the abundance of flowers were testimonies of the esteem the community held for him. Mrs. Fred. S. Howard, of Ionia, sang two solos and these were sung without accompaniment.

Nephews, William, Harold, Allen, Elmer and Edgar McKendry, of Ionia, and Lee Strachan, of Muir, served as bearers.

The interment took place in the North Plains Cemetery besides his infant daughter, who died 41 years ago.
