Maybelle Hayes Brown was the sixth child of Benjamin E. Brown and Lucy May Dean Brown, who had come to California during the Gold Rush years. They were both from upstate New York, but met and married in 1863 in California. They lived in Calaveras County, then bought a farm in San Joaquin County on Eight Mile Road. Sometime before 1900 Benjamin, Lucy, and Maybelle moved to San Francisco. They lived there at the time of the 1906 earthquake. Maybelle was married in 1903 to Emil Johnson. They raised four children in Oakland, Berkeley, Boulder Creek, and in the 1920s in Rockford Illinois. In the early 1930s they returned to the Bay Area of California. Maybelle died of a stroke while visiting their oldest son in Bakersfield CA.
