Adrienne Adams was the daughter of Edwin Hunt and Sue Broaddus Adams. She attended Stephens College, 1925, the University of Missouri, 1927, and the American School of Design, New York, 1928. She married John Lonzo Anderson August 17, 1935.

Adrienne or "Dean," to her friends, had a long career as an artist, illustrator, and author of children's books; teacher in a rural school in Oklahoma, 1927; free-lance designer of displays, murals, textiles, greeting cards, and other materials in New York City, 1929-49; Staples-Smith Displays, New York City; decorator of furniture and murals, and art director, 1945-52; full-time illustrator, 1952-.

Adrienne was recognized in her field, runner-up, Caldecott Medal, 1960, for illustration of Houses of the Sea, and 1962, for illustration of The Day We Saw the Sun Come Up; Rutgers Award, College of Library Services, Rutgers University, 1973, for contributions to children's literature; University of Southern Mississippi's Medallion, 1977.
