Clara or Cluffy, as she was mostly known by, was born and baptized on the same day in St. Constant, Laprarie, Quebec, Canada on the 30th July 1818, the 9th of 12 known children of Michel Patenaude and Josephte Frichet aka French. Whoever gave her birth year for the headstone was off by a few years, but it was not unusual for exact dates to be known in that time period. Spelling was awful and name variations on documents was all over the place. Some records list her name as Sophie, but it is unknown if it is a middle name or an abstraction of Cleophee. She married Francois Xavier Poirier, Sr. aka Peach in St. Patrick's Church, Hogansburg, St. Lawrence County, New York on the 7th January 1841. The couple moved back and forth between Quebec and New York in the early years of their marriage, but settled permanently in the rural farming town of Constable, Franklin County, New York by 1850. Constable, New York was 7 miles from the Canadian border. There the couple raised their many children, Francis Frank II b 1841 (most likely died in childhood), Louis b 1842, Mathilda b 1844, Antoine "Anthony" b 1846, Joseph Leander b 1850, Philip b abt 1851, Sawyer b abt 1853 (perhaps another childhood death), Adaline b 1855, and Francois Xavier "Oliver" Poirier III, aka Peach b 1859. Their youngest son Francois Xavier "Oliver" moved his own family to the Springfield, MA. area for job opportunities and many family members followed soon after, including Clara and her husband who were in their elderly years by 1894. They lived with Oliver and his family until their deaths. Clara died from shock and a fractured hip, age 78 years. Son Antoine is said to have been buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois sometime after 1925, unconfirmed to date.
