David was the son of Sturges Burr (d. 1796) and Elizabeth Judson (1765-1850). He married Annabella in Litchfield, Connecticut on 12 April 1812. They had at least six children.

During the War of 1812, he served as a Lieutenant in Capt. Murphy's Compay, 19th (Ambler's) Regiment of Virginia Militia.

He died of "Dyspepsia," per Cemetery records, and is buried near his wife and two of his children in the plot he owned.
