Records show that Thomas' best man and godfather of his first child was one Daniel O'Connell. Daniel died suddenly on 28 May 1899 in a railroad accident at age 27. He was living with Thomas at 14 Maryland Avenue, Wilmington, and working with him as a bartender at the time of his death.
