wife of Joseph E. Johnson of Navesink, died early Thursday morning at the Monmouth Memorial hospital at Long Branch, where she had been a patient three weeks. The day before she passed away she underwent an operation for goitre. Mrs. Johnson was 54 years old and had lived in Middletown township all her life. She was born at Locust Point. She was active in politics and civic affairs, and was well known throughout the township. At the time of her death she was a member of the Republican county executive committee, an office she held for a number of years. She was a trustee of the Middletown township public health association and the Navesink library. She was a member of the Navesink Methodist chuch, the Epworth league and the Ladies' Aid society, and the Royal Neighbors' lodge. Besides her husband, who is treasurer of Middletown township, Mrs. Johnson is survived by four sons, Neil, Otto, Donald and Walter Johnson, and a daughter, Miss Eleanor Johnson. Also surviving her is a brother, Simon Despreaux of Rumson. The funeral Sunday afternoon at the Navesink Methodist church was one of the largest ever held at that place. The procession of cars was a mile and a half in length. Officiating at the service were Rev. Andrew Nelson, pastor of the church; Rev. Hollis A. Hart, a former pastor; and Rev. Charles P. Johnson, pastor of All Saints church. Burial by A. M. Posten and Son was in Bay View cemetery. The four sons of the deceased were bearers. There were many floral tributes. Preceeding the funeral at the church, a service was conducted at the house by the Royal Neighbors, which is the women's branch of the Modern Woodmen.
