Carl Wilhelm Haberland, age 32, arrived in New York City with his brother in law William Matern, on May 4, 1888 on the "Gallia" via Liverpool, five months before the rest of their families. His origin at Burg (just NE of Magdeburg in Saxon-Anhalt) which was then part of "Prussia", was mis-entered on the passenger list (Castlegarden.org) as "Russia".
Carl worked as a carpenter at the Erie RR shops near his home in Dunmore, a town adjacent to Scranton, Pa. According to the Erie RR employee news, he retired in Nov 1932 with 42 years of service. He was 77 years of age.
Carl was a member of the Knights of the Mystic Chain, a fraternal organization chapter in the Petersburg section of Dunmore.
