Death Notices

CHEEK - Dale Cheek of Scottsville, died Wednesday. Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary

Dale Cheek, a 30 year resident of Scottsville, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at home after a short illness.

Born Dec. 7, 1913, in Cove, Arkansas, he was the son of Eunice Wilson Cheek and F. Cody Cheek. He was a five year active duty veteran of World War II with the 809th Service Regiment, a long-time Jersey Shore resident and restauranteur/chef of "Dale's Coffee Shop" in Spring Lake, N.J., and a 30 year founding member and parishioner of St. George's Catholic Church, Scottsville.

Hard-working, kind, gentle and a straight-shooter from the git-go, Dale was a history buff, storyteller, card player and familiar figure on the Scottsville scene. He was a member of the building committee for St. George's, a member of the Scottsville Book Club, the "Guys & Gals Garden Club" and past Secretary/Treasurer of the Scottsville Pool. As a 29 year Charlottesville Farmer's Market fixture, he demonstrated his love and skill of horticulture and life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Delzie M. Cheek of Scottsville; his cherished children, Charles Cheek of Falls Church, Anne Cheek Bruff of Oakland, Calif., and James Cheek of Spring Lake, N.J. Other survivors include his loving brothers, Clint Cheek of Tulsa, Okla., Bill Cheek of Arizona; his sisters, Louise Kesterson of Cove, Ark., and Pauline Chisum of Texas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Cheek of Amarillo, Texas.

Grandpa Dale is missed terribly by his grandchildren, Judd Bruff of Oakland, Calif., Julie Bruff of Los Angeles and Joseph Cheek of Washington, D.C.; the dear Raffetto and Casagrande families of Spring Lake, N.J.; his many nieces and nephews; and daughters-in-law, Annetta Cheek and Paula Cheek; and a son-in-law, Clyde Bruff.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2004, at St. George's Catholic Church, Scottsville, with Father Brian Mulcahy, O.P., as officiant. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2004, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

Donations may be made in Dale's memory to St. George's Catholic Church Parish Fund, P.O. Box 9, Scottsville, VA 24590 or the Scottsville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 33, Scottsville, VA 24590.
