Pamela Digby was the daughter of Edward Digby, 11th Baron Digby, and his wife, Constance Pamela Alice, the daughter of Henry Campbell Bruce, 2nd Baron Aberdare. She was married on October 4, 1939 to Randolph Churchill, the only son of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill. Their only child, Winston, was named in honor of his grandfather. They were divorced and the marriage was later annulled. She was married in Carson City, Nevada on May 4, 1960 to Broadway producer Leland Hayward. Following his death, she resumed contact with W. Averell Harriman and they were subsequently married on September 27, 1971. She became politically active in Democratic Party politics through her third husband. She became a United States citizen in 1971 and established a political action committee to support viable Democratic candidates for office. The National Women's Democratic Club named her "Woman of the Year" in 1980. She was appointed the United States Ambassador to France by President Bill Clinton in 1993. She was also named one of People magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People in the world.
