Lieut. Millard DeBerry Dies Of Heart Attack in Honolulu:
Major and Mrs. Roy T. DeBerry, Junior Military Academy, Bloomington Springs, are in receipt of a telegram from the War Department stating that their son, Lieut. Millard Thomas DeBerry, U. S. Naval Reserve, had died on September 19, at Pearl Harbor, T. H., where he was stationed in the service of his country. Major DeBerry learned from additional communication that his son died unexpectedly of a acute ailment and the day prior to his death he was apparently in the best of physical condition. In a letter
received by his parents under date of the 17th, Lieut DeBerry stated he hoped to be home by Thanksgiving.
Lieut. DeBerry was reared in Putnam County where he attended the elementary and high schools and graduated from the Tennessee Polytechnic Institure. Prior to his enlisting for naval duty in September, 1941, he was a member of the Junior Military Academy faculty. The early part of 1942 he was commissioned an Ensign at Prairie State College, New York City, and later attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. While on sea duty in the Atlantic area he was promoted to Lieut. (j. g.) and following 22 months of service in North Africa he returned to the States in December, 1944, and for a time was on
temporary duty in Washington D. C. In the intervening months he received his Lieutenancy. In June, 1945, he spent his leave with his parents, and at the expiration of same, reported to the West Coast where he was stationed until sailing for his Pearl Harbor assignment
In addition to his parents, Lieut. DeBerry is survived by a brother, J. T. DeBerry of Detroit, MI, and four sisters, Mrs. Forrest Evans, Misses Edith Mable, Maxine, and Dorothy DeBerry, grandmother, Mrs. Meda DeBerry, Bloomington Springs, and Mrs. M. F. Hamilton, of Humboldt.
