Funeral services for Sister Raphael Bina, de N.D. of Omaha, NE, formerly of Spillville, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Theodore Richling, Rev. Donald Hawes, and Rev. Louis Trzil officiating.
Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. Pallbearers were: Art Bina, Paul Bina, Ray Bina, Jerry Bina, and Ed Polansky. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Sr. Raphael, 86, died Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the Notre Dame Motherhouse, Omaha, NE.
Sister Mary Raphael Bina, N.D. was born Ottilia Bina on July 2, 1917 near Spillville, the daughter of Wenceslaus and Rose Ann (Soukup) Bina. She attended St. Wenceslaus grade school in Spillville.
At the age of 15, she entered the convent.
She returned home because of an illness, and after she was well, she and her sister, Victoria now Sister Antonia entered the Convent together on August 12, 1938. They took their Profession of First Vows on August 13, 1940. She spent all her years of Ministry at the Notre Dame Motherhouse in Omaha in the following capacities: directress of boarders, sewing assistant, care of flower gardens and grottoes, arranging flowers for the altars, portress, care of the infirm Sisters and Sisters relatives, making home made soap, serving meals and prayer ministry.
She celebrated her 60th jubilee at St. Wenceslaus in Spillville on August 13, 2000.
She is survived by one brother: George of Renton, WA; and three sisters: Sister Antonia Bina, N.D. of Omaha, NE, Agnes Robertson and Anna Mixdorf, both of Waterloo.
Sr. Raphael Bina was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Jimmy, Charles, Tony, and Jerome; and one sister: Rose Bina in infancy.
