Husband of Lula Matthews. Son of Jonas and Mary Woodrow Matthews. Died of influenza. SCDC #1939-4291.

Hemingway, March 17. --John A. Matthews, 80, died at his home here Tuesday following an illness of three weeks. Mr. Matthews, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of this section, was a native of Marion county but came here to make his home about 12 years ago. Mr. Matthews was a loyal member of the Hemingway Baptist church and as long as his health permitted was a regular attendant at all services. Mr. Matthews was married twice. His first wife was the former Miss Alice McLeod of Timmonsville. His second wife, who survives, was Miss Lula Belk. The following sons and daughters of his first marriage survive: The Rev. M.L. Matthews, Georgetown, Ky.; Dr. H.J. Matthews, Elliott; Mrs. John H. Smith, Wedgefield; O.F. Matthews, Sumter and E.J. Matthews, Hemingway.
Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. J. Belton Baker, and the Rev. Maurice P. Garner on Wednesday morning from the Poplar Hill church. Interment followed in the church cemetery nearby. (--obituary, The County Record, Kingstree, SC, Thursday, 23 Mar 1939)
